    Images of Korea

What unique Korean images would you like to show people from other countries? You might show them the mountains of Seoraksan National Park, the beaches of Busan, the royal palaces in Seoul, or the smiles of children dressed in colorful hanbok. We can see the beautiful spirit of Korea in all of these things, as well as in many other things. For years, Korean photographers have tried to capture the essence of Korea on camera. The images they have produced show various aspects of Korea — including its nature, history, and even the faces of its people.

    Spiritual Landscapes

Photographer Bae Bien-u (1950 -) has tried to capture images that show the natural beauty of Korea. For more than ten years, he traveled across Korea and photographed its unique scenes. He is known for his images of the pine trees on the hills surrounding the town of Gyeongju. In fact, pine trees are found all over Korea and are a familiar landscape to most Koreans. However, Bae didn’t want to simply capture them. He wanted to highlight the cultural importance of the trees, which had been believed to connect the human soul with heaven.

Besides, paintings from the Joseon Dynasty inspired Bae to take pictures of the essence of the land. He believes that photographs can continue the tradition of painting Korean landscapes. Instead of using paint brushes, he captures the country’s natural beauty on his camera.

    Simple Beauty

Photographer Koo Bohn-chang (1953 -) found the inspiration for his images of Korea in museums. As part of a four-year project, Koo visited a number of museums in Korea and other countries to photograph ceramics from the Joseon Dynasty. He chose sixteen examples of pure white Korean porcelain as his subjects and shot them mostly in black and white.

Even though ceramics were popular throughout East Asia for centuries, Koreans especially liked simple white porcelains. They were very different from the richly decorated ceramics made in China and Japan. Furthermore, their simple beauty reflected Confucian values, which ran through the long history of the Joseon Dynasty.

Koo especially wanted to emphasize how long time has passed since Koreans created white porcelain. So, Koo captured these stained, cracked, and worn surfaces of the old vessels in a beautiful light. The true art of his works was in these details.

    Smiling Faces

To photographer Kim Ki-chan (1938 - 2005), the spirit of Korea lies in its people. He spent thirty years recording the lives of the people in his hometown of Seoul. After the Korean War, he watched the town change rapidly into a huge modern city. He wanted to show the experiences of people affected by these changes in his pictures. Some of his most famous works are from the 1970s. These photographs capture the small houses and narrow alleys of a small town in Seoul, before they were cleared away to make room for apartment buildings.

Kim’s pictures show the lives of ordinary people back then that are very different from those of people now. The smiling faces of children playing in alleys free of cars remind us of the close relationships people in the past used to have with their neighbors. These kinds of relationships are seen less in today’s crowded cities filled with tall apartment buildings and busy streets. His photos, therefore, give older Koreans the chance to recall their memories of the past.

We have seen the pictures of three Korean photographers who tried to capture the images of Korean culture and its spiritual essence. From the landscapes of big forests to the details of porcelain vessels and the smiles of the people, their works have made a deep impression on us by showing various aspects of Korea.
